Carbon reduction opportunities for the healthcare sector
03 December 2020 | CO2
On Friday, December 4, Marta Suanzes will participate as main speaker and representative of Factor Ideas for Change in a series of workshops aimed at helping Mediterranean hospitals to lay the foundations to mitigate their impact on climate change through a carbon management plan. These workshops will take place between December 4 and 18.
The climate footprint of the global health sector is equivalent to 4.4% of net greenhouse gas emissions globally, which contributes to climate change. This has a negative impact on the health of the same communities as serving the sector. Therefore, there is a powerful incentive for the health sector to act, first, to reduce its GHG emissions, and second, to become a prominent advocate for social and political action on climate change.
Factor works with Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) in the development of the project called Low-carbon healthcare in the Mediterranean Region. This project aims to help 5 hospitals located in Portugal, Spain, Greece and Italy in the analysis of their impact on climate change and in the identification of cost-efficient reduction measures that mitigate the most significant impacts. Thanks to these results, the 5 hospitals will be able to start and implement their carbon management plan from 2021.
This series of workshops called "Carbon Reduction Opportunities" aim to present the results of the carbon footprint of each of these hospitals and then work, through dynamic sessions, in identifying reduction opportunities in areas such as: Energy, Transportation, Waste, Water, and Anesthetic Gases.
Agenda for December 4:
- Introduction and objectives of the workshop
- Carbon footprint results
- Success stories in the health sector
- Development of Key Performance Indicators
- Brainstorming to identify potential reduction measures
- Next steps
