Only 8% of the population living in rural areas in West Africa has access to electricity. One of the main challenges of this region is to provide universal access to electricity by the year 2030. To achieve this goal, it is essential to develop a policy framework that promotes the use of renewable energy for rural energy access through the roll-out off clean energy mini-grids (CEMG).
To this end, Factor cooperated with intec to facilitate a 3-day workshop on behalf of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) on strategies and policies for the promotion of clean energy based mini-grids. About 60 energy experts and officials from all over West Africa attended the workshop.
The training covered the following topics: CEMG technical and economic aspects, Energy and electricity policies, Economic policy and regulation, Customers protection and environmental policy and regulation Licenses and contract regulation, and Financial support schemes.
